Title: Tenth of December by George Saunders
Few writers can match the originality of Saunders. The characters who populate these stories are familiar... the dutiful son, the well-meaning mother, the alienated soldier, the aging cancer patient...but rarely are they depicted in such a revealing way. The tales vary in tone from humorous to darkly menacing, and each is told in an authentic, unique voice. My favorite story was "Victory Lap," in which a shy teenager defies all he has been taught to take heroic action. Which is your favorite?
