Olney Reads

We like knowing what our Olney friends
are reading (or listening to or watching)!
Tune in every Monday, when we will feature an Olney reader's
(or listener's or watcher's) favorite title.

Valarie of Olney Library with book Tenth of December by George Saunders
Reader: Valarie, Librarian at Olney Library
Title: Tenth of December by George Saunders

Few writers can match the originality of Saunders. The characters who populate these stories are familiar... the dutiful son, the well-meaning mother, the alienated soldier, the aging cancer patient...but rarely are they depicted in such a revealing way. The tales vary in tone from humorous to darkly menacing, and each is told in an authentic, unique voice. My favorite story was "Victory Lap," in which a shy teenager defies all he has been taught to take heroic action. Which is your favorite?
